Appealing to the smallest audience imaginable

Bibliographic Clerihews

Father of the art, Anthony Panizzi
Was an Italian political refugee, see,
Who catalogued works in the British Museum
So folks could more easily see ‘em.

Some may’ve thought old Charles Cutter
Came off as a bit of a nutter
When he said a collocating device
Would actually be rather nice.

Pioneering Melvil Dewey
Was actually a little bit screwy.
When LC suggested his classes were lacking
He scoffed and sent them packing.

It is finished.

This post marks a (…) first: September 2004 is now the only month in which I’ve managed to make at least one blog post each day.

It’s taken a lot of trivia, but somehow I made it. Calloo, I say, and callay too.

I need some inspiration here.

I’ve got this itch to write, but I’m having the damnedest time coming up with a subject, a topic, or even a notion. Grr grr blah.

Had dinner at a local place called Tokyo tonight, out with a couple of people from the QSA. The best umagi I’ve ever tasted, and I’ve had some pretty decent eel. After my unfortunate sushi even while visiting Amy I’ve realized I pretty much have to stick to nigiri, which considering the heavenly quality of what I had tonight won’t be such a bad thing at all.

Tokyo is one of those dinner-is-a-show places, and our chef/entertainer must be commended for putting his all into a performance for just the four of us. His chow was pretty tasty too, but that’s almost beside the point.

Right. Blah. Any ideas?

*whew!*

Have been working on classwork all evening and have finally finished. The good news is that I’m actually happy with the article summary for LS500 this week; the bad news is that I’m not sure I can trust myself, at this point, to wake up on time in the morning.

You’d think that by now,

really, there would be some sort of consitent form of article citation, at least within a given field. For this project, though, I’m finding that each individual damn index for library science cites articles in a similar but slightly different way.

It is to aargh at.

Home sweet home

Fred over at Slacktivist takes off from the title of Thomas Frank’s recent book and asks What’s the matter with Alabama? He points out how we Alabamians voted in droves against our own self -interest in and offers some speculation on why we might have done such a damn-fool thing.

I think he’s pretty much right-on with his evaluation, but he appears to underestimate how strongly the myth of self-reliance is held here. Many, many people in this state like to think of themselves as rough-hewn self-made manly men, even while they’re standing in line to cash their welfare checks so they can run across the border for a few more lottery tickets.

(Bitter? Me? No!)

I’ll stop now, as I’m already starting to get het up on this topic. Also, I’ve already exhausted my week’s supply of hyphens in this single post. Go read the article, which is much more eloquent than I could possibly provide.

HA!

I’m probably the last person to hear about this, but the comic strip You Damn Kid by Owen Dunn is both hilarious and available for free online.

I started going through the archives from the beginning, and it’s probably not surprising that this is hands-down my favorite entry so far.

Reach out, reach out and touch someone…

Really, “teledildonics” says it all.

Grumble

I was awkwarded out of my seat during intermission, which meant I missed the second act of tonight’s guerilla theater, which act happened to be the Wicked revue. Grr grr grr.

It’s a bit too convoluted to try getting into details. I’ll just say that even the greenest freshman should realize that if one is in a capacity crowd during the first act then at intermission one should not pull out one’s phone and invite more people to the second act.

Grr.

Somethings in Blankets

I’d thought I was making pigs in blankets for the picnic today, but then I realized I’d bought all-beef sausages. I suppose I ended up with cows in blankets, but that just doesn’t sound right.

Whatever they were, I didn’t have an easy time making them. I sliced and sliced at unfolded crescent-roll dough, twisted and folded the stuff until the sausages were nestled snug and secure and comfy, laid all the little individual pieces out on my baking pan to be cooked, and then walked right into a bad sitcom gag.

My pan wouldn’t fit in my oven. I twisted and turned, but I just couldn’t find a way to get it all in. I decided the appetizers wouldn’t cook well at all if I left the oven door hanging open, so I was forced to find an alternative.

Did you know that a Pyrex casserole dish functions quite well indeed as an ad-hoc cookie sheet? Didn’t scorch the bottoms or anything.

(The picnic ended up being a blast, even if only ten people showed. Tonight: Sky King with yummy, yummy Jude Law and then guerilla theater on campus.)
